Preserving the history of the Indian Territory Freedmen necessarily includes the publishing of that history so that it is exposed to a wider audience that may not be aware of the impact freedmen had on the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek and Seminole tribes.

The interviews of formerly enslaved people contained in the Indian Pioneer Papers presents the history of Indian Territory from a different point of view . It should be a vital part of any discussion and research when the history of the west and Oklahoma. Our hope is this feature begins to open up discussions and encourage further scholarship on the legacy of Indian Territory Freedmen.
